Buy only what is actually needed

Whenever we go to market , we tend to pick unnecessary items, because of discounts/offers/clearance sale. Most of the times these items put pressure on our environment. Buy what is actually needed, and you will not fill your fridge with unnecessary items. In today's world we are mostly living in areas from where shopping stores, food stores are near by. Buy food for not more that 2-3 days. In this way you will- Eat fresh Chances of wastage of food will also be less At least you will save $250 per year from food wastage, and this is a considerable saving( this include cost of fuel, time, money) Trust me , it works. Saved 1400 poly bags and counting

Image
I started the mission to not to use plastic bags or poly bags in 2009. So per day average is 4. This is what I notice when people go to markets they do not carry anything with them like jute or cloth bags. And when they purchase even a very small thing , they ask shopkeepers for a poly bags. And this is the story of educated class in India. Think about people who are not much educated and still use poly bags. This is very sad that having known in advance what are all the disadvantages of polythene , people use it blindly. I started not to use polythene mission in 2009 with few of my friends.  So if I take an average of 4 poly bags per day then in 4 years and 2 months I saved close to 1500 poly bags. Believe me if you keep these many poly bags in your home you will not feel good. What I do is, there are rare times when I have to take poly bags. In this case I do two things   1. I reuse this poly bag for as many times as possible   2. I return the poly ...

Avoid usage of plastic

Ways to keep the environment clean: 1. User bags made of cloth or papers. These bags decompose in the environment.    Plastic bags take hundreds of years to decompose. 2. Avoid buying cold drinks in plastic bottles, instead buy them in glass bottels as glass can be recycled. I have seen glass recycling factories in Nat Geo channel. They crusj the old glass and mould it in new shape. This can be really done. 3. Avoid buying items in plastics, e.g. even if you buy biscuits or chips , they are sold in plastic packaging. What alternative I have found is: go to bakery and get fresh biscuits , cakes, and other bakery items in paper cover. So after you finish your bakery items , no trace remains in nature. This can be really done. When we go on outings, we normally go to dams, lakes or other natural places. What we take there in food items are plastic water bottles, chips in plastic packing, other similar items in plastic. This whole waste is dumped in environment. Is it really good,...

Reduce the usage of Paper Napkins

Normally 1 tree can make 25000 paper napkins. Considering this fact, if one person on an average uses 5 paper napkins per day , Then in an year he/she will use 360*5=1800 10 person will use 1800*10=18000 paper napkins A software company of 1000 employees will consume 1800*1000=18,00,000 paper napkins Now total number of trees 1800000/25000 = 72 trees In India if I take an average that 5,00,000 employees uses paper napkins , then total number of trees cut in a year, 5,00,000 x 1800 = 900 Million (900 x 10^6 ) / 25000 =  36000 Trees So in a year we can save 36000 Trees, imagine that It will take 15-20 years to grow 36000 trees. One thing I want to ask , (For Indian people) , the generation to which I belong to , our parents have never used paper napkins, and in 1980s and 1990s , the use of paper napkins were almost zero for middle class people, we were close to nature before than we are now. Few of my friends use handkerchiefs, this is best option. If we cann...

Solar Energy

Solar Energy. Solar Energy is slowly becoming the need. It is renewable energy. Pollution free. Never ending. As per a program by discovery Channel, Sun supplies 13 Units of total energy demand of our earth per day. The only hurdle is to capture it and use it in our interest. Power tower in Barstow, California. As we have seen , the Tsunami Japan , the effect of Nuclear energy after disaster. It was impossible to control the damages. But if renewable resources are used , then such damages can be prevented. Few Facts about solar energy: 1.Argument that sun provides power only during the day is countered by the fact that 70% of energy demand is during daytime hours. At night, traditional methods can be used to generate the electricity. 2.P ollution free, indefinitely sustainable 3.Mitigates the effects of acid rain, carbon dioxide, and other impacts of burning coal and counters risks associated with nuclear energy. 4.Energy reaching the earth is incredible. By one calculation, 30...
